Interview with Singapore Women’s Coach and Men’s Team Star Neoh Yi Hui

1 – Can you give us a bit of a background of your Dodgeball playing career, and how you ended up representing your country?

I started out as a multi-sports coach, always looking out for new opportunities. Got chanced upon it by my buddy Emmanuel back in 2010 and never looked back since.
Tons of hardwork, experimentation, hours of research and video analysis got me the skills and knowledge.

2 – Any highlights from your international career? Best games etc?

Highlights would be knowing and getting TEAM SINGAPORE qualified to the Dodgeball World Cup and proving to many that Singapore is small yet powerful.
Best game would be 2015 APC Melbourne when i took the set against Hong Kong Men’s despite playing 6v1.

3-  Singapore have qualified for the World Cup for the first time. How does it feel? Is there any nerves or pressure?

It’ll be the greatest lie to say there’s no pressure.
But I have been trained to handle and excel under pressure. The stronger the opponent, the stronger we play.

4 – In the lead up to the World Cup Singapore have had a lot of team building exercises, training camps, group training etc. You seem like a very close-knit group of players. Do you feel this bond will take the team to another level and increase your chances at the World Cup?

Definitely. Team sports requires faith and trust from everyone knowing they got your back covered.

5 – What’s your workout routine and training like in preparation for the 2018 Dodgeball World Cup? Any tips you can lend to aspiring dodgeball players?

Planning the training schedules for the players is the toughest job as the coach. Singapore comprises of so many races and each has their own dos and donts, their celebrations etc.

Hitting the gym every monday and during my own spare time to keep fit and healthy, while Tuesdays Thursdays Saturdays provide everyone with chances to get some dodging action.

To aspiring players. Never dream too much. Take steps to make the dream a reality! And most importantly, trust and have faith in your coach!!

6 – How does it feeling knowing that in a few weeks you’ll be playing in one of the most famous stadiums in the world, Madison Square Garden?

Egg-citing!!! I am a basketball player. And MSG is like a must go to place for anyone who knows NBA history.
Can’t wait to meet my friends from other countries in the court.

7 – One of the core beliefs of the Asian Dodgeball Federation is our #StrongerTogether campaign. So we’d love for you to share your thoughts on who you believe some of the best players in Asia-Pacific are. Who should we be looking out for?

Anyone and everyone in Asia Pacific are also strong! And together, we will prevail.

8 – Any predictions for Singapore at the World Cup? Can Singapore win all the categories you qualified for?

Victory ain’t totally judged by the medals or trophies. So long as the entire team does their best leaving no regrets behind, that will mean victory to me.

9 – How do you think the other Asia-Pacific nations will go at the World Cup? Any nation you’d like to single out for being a favourite for success on this stage?

I feel asia pacific will do great and would like to see all Malaysia Australia Hong Kong and Singapore in the Finals!

Lastly some fun questions!

10 – Where is the best place to eat in Singapore? And what’s your favourite national dish?

My home! My mum cooks the best Soy Braised Chicken Wings on EARTH.

Best National Dish would be Fried Carrot Cake. You can eat it during any time.

11 – Which country in Asia-Pacific has the best food? Which dish is the best?

Tough to decide on best. But i do love the crazy amount of DimSum (snacks) from Hong Kong, and the street food from Taiwan.

Tropical fruits would be Singapore as the Quality is always good and never fearing of getting cheated.
